Evolution of Darwin’s Finches

Thu, Nov 02, 2006
Location - TBA

Speaker

Rosemary GrantDR. ROSEMARY GRANT
Professor of Molecular Biology

DESCRIPTION

On November 2 2006, 450 secondary school students and their teachers shared 30 years of exciting research and adventures in the Galapagos Islands with Dr. Rosemary Grant. The Galapagos, Dr. Grant explained, are subject to extreme climactic conditions impacting the evolution of finches. While the ancestor of modern finches was estimated to arrive in the Galapagos 2-3 million years ago, most species were formed in the last 1-1.5 million years ago. Currently there are 30 species of finches under study. Dr. Grant explained her sparse living and laboratory conditions on Daphne, a volcanic island and described the amazing process of evolution she witnessed.
